Roland,
You are absolutely right. The aC pricing is way above what most people were expecting, and the comments to the pricing announcement make for fascinating reading.
And, I predict exactly what you have suggested. I think it will drive a lot of traffic over here as there are those who very much value the open source approach to the project, and of course enjoy the pricing.
It will come down to, of course, whether the value of the new features in aC 1.0 are worth the costs. For some they certainly will be and they will become clients. For others, they will not be, and they'll be looking for alternatives, and I'm sure that PP will be the landing spot for many.
So, now the challenge is to get a real team working over here to develop the fork and build the community that is essential for an open source project to really thrive.
True, this is really a challenge. Right now we are a (very) small team with everypone doing everything and we have to figure out how to proceed and to define our processes.
So to everyone who's listening: please contribute to the project, get in contact with us or give us some suggestions / experiences from other OSS projects :-)
Something that may be worth doing is making sure that there is an easy way to go from ActiveCollab 0.71 to ProjectPier. I just discovered this project after reading about the pricing changes, and will most likely be taking that path. I read that at this point it should just be a matter of overwriting files, but I haven't had a chance to verify that yet. When I try it, I will be sure to post the results.

aC said re-considered pricing might come out after the weekend. If it's not significantly different I would advise you all to get ready for some traffic (and an opportunity).

Wow, what a change! This is good news for us as it means PP will get ALL of the wontpay market, but bad for the world in general cause the free version was a good idea for non-profits... I guess this just puts even more weight on the work we're doing.
Can you feel the space guys? It's just us in here.

Well, at the moment we need just about everything. The Development Page goes into the various tasks in some detail, but we need peoeple to test and report bugs, code new features and help fill out the documentation. Give us a shout with the contact form and let us know what you'd like to help with.
You can also just start using the Issue Tracker to log bugs or try to fix the ones already there (or take a stab at some of the feature requests).
oh boy, this is really expensive and I suppose that this will drive some traffic to us ... :-)

I noticed that aC has released a new pricing system for 1.0 that is dramatically simplified and dramatically less expensive.
But, they have announced that with this new system they won't be offering a free version.
But, it is heartening to see how the community's voice has been heard, respected, and considered.
