Moving Forward....
Based on my last post, I think it is fair to say that version 0.8.0 of ProjectPier has been a fair bit of a success. Its important not to rest on our laurels, especially when there so many people are looking to improve this project. (and we haven't even hit 1.0 yet)
I think the time has come to outline the plan for getting to the next release and start discussing all the details.
I have outlined a Road Map HERE. This includes a code freeze on Feb 1, 2008. which means that any new features or improvements that you would like to see in the next version need to be contributed by then. After that date, only bug fixes, code cleanup, etc will be allowed.
So, when will it be released?
Well, that depends on you. We need your help to develop, test, debug, report, document and support the project. There won't be a specified release date - it will be done when its ready. That means that there will be a series of betas and release candidates made, and when we've had at least one release candidate without any new critical bugs we'll make a final release.
How can I help?
We need people to submit code patches for improvements
We need people to test and review patches in the queue.
We need people to help improve usability and user interface designs
We need people to try breaking things and then report bugs
We need people to help document all the new features
And eventually, we also need people to update their themes and translation files for the new release. There will be a string freeze as we get closer to a release to provide a stable platform for translations to be made.
Please check the development documentation for more information on how to help

Hi Ryan,
thanks for the update. Unfortunately you didn't add a link to the Roadmap ...
Please keep in mind that translation will take its time and we should do at least 1 or 2 betas / rcs like we did with 0.8.
It is good seeing the project move forward.
- Roland
Sounds like a good plan.
Will the code after the code freeze be classed as 1.0?
If so, will it be after the release of 1.0 that new features will be implemented?
Where is the link to the road map?
Do you need developers?
From looking at some of the other nodes on this site, I'm guessing that that's a place holder for the link to the roadmap when it's published :P
Hey Guys,
Sorry for the confusion, I had been working on a few things and wasn't quite ready to make those posts published yet. But the cat is out of the bag, so I have update the post to provide a link to the road map that I started working on. I'm still trying to put together some more information, but its a good start.
@zariok: We definitely need more developers to help. Please subscribe to the mailing lists and check out the development docs on how to get started.
@koko: In general the answer to that question is "whatever features people contribute", but there are already patches available for time tracking and some other features that need some more development but will probably be included in the next release.
I have subscribed and asked a db abstraction question via the forums.
Have you guys considered moving to mantisbt instead of the somewhat crappy drupal (assuming) bug/task tracker?
Hi zairok,
I saw your post about db abstraction, i'll post a response there. We're using the drupal issue tracker so that we can effectively integrate it with the website and to provide issue trackers to all the other projects hosted here (themes, translations and probably modules in the future).
I use mantis at work a bit - what do you feel is missing from the issue tracker that would make things easier for you?
Hi,
Can you give a list of which features will be added to the new version of PP? For example the timetracking module?
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone - especially the people managing and organising development - for PP. Kudos to you all.
I hope to get into using it and hopefully giving back some help and doing some development of it myself.
